What size building should we plan?

The general consensus is to be able to double your current attendance, but if the building is not full it can create an “empty” feeling. Be sure to plan for the same percentage of increase in all ministries and functions in order to maintain balance. The financial capability of the church is generally the most controlling factor governing size.

This site provides a tool that will help you evaluate your future attendance and growth. Please keep in mind that there are several factors that influence growth including building a new facility, and this tool is based on a mathematical calculations; however, it is very helpful with estimation.

With an educated estimate of how large the church is going to grow, the actual size of the building needs to be considered. Each space or area in a church is going to vary in size for its purpose. For example a classroom for ten toddlers will be larger than a classroom for ten adults. The needs of the church will also play a part in how the space is utilized. The size is also going to be based on the vision of the church. An evaluation of the existing facilities should be conducted to see where space can be utilized, if a remodel or addition is done. The maximum size of the building will depend on what type of building material is used as well.
