What types of committees should our church form for the planning of the new facility?

First, determine if you are forming a planning committee or a building committee. The planning committee is really the first step. This committee does not necessarily need construction or building experience, although people of that background are often on such committees. The planning committee’s function is to determine needs and space planning based on the ministries goals, objectives, and long-range vision. So, at a minimum, this committee needs to include people who understand and lead the ministry aspects of the church.

Later, a building committee may be formed (or created out of the earlier planning committee). It is this committee who will then be charged with carrying out the actual construction plans.

The number of members on the committees should be either 5 or 7, maybe smaller or larger, but never equal in numbers.
